172-Year-Old Cabin Gets an Upgrade
For the second-ever Renovation Hunters project, a lot of thought went into choosing the location. Host Hal Shaffer and general contractor Kevin Tarkovich joined forces to pick the best property. Hal was searching for a compelling story, while Kevin looked at the property from a construction perspective. They both agreed – Critz was the perfect location!
The Critz Cabin is a 172-year-old structure, passed down through multiple generations. While it was certainly in good enough condition to host a few hunters, it wasn’t well-suited for a family get-a-way.
Unlike other Renovation Hunters projects, upgrades to this home included the entire property and not just the existing structure. Exterior upgrades featured an outdoor shower, shooting lanes and even a hunting shed.
Products Used in the Critz Cabin
Baird’s natural hardwood lumber was a key component to upgrading the cabin while keeping the same timeless charm as the home’s original interior.
Even though the cabin in Critz, Virginia was the smallest vacation property renovated in the first season of Renovation Hunters, it was the most all-encompassing. Renovations started within the structure but extended to the entire property!
Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods provided character-grade hickory S4S lumber, character grade hickory stair treads, red oak plywood, red oak S4S lumber and multiple special order products.

The Critz Cabin project also featured a fishing rod holder made with Baird Brothers’ red oak S4S lumber. While this project was specially created for the show, you can make it for yourself by checking out the Build It With Baird tutorial.

Connecting to the Outdoors With the Critz Cabin
Across the United States of America, people celebrate the outdoors in different ways, from sporting events and camping to hunting and fishing. The hunting camps and vacation cabins featured in the show continue to provide friends and family with an opportunity to enjoy one another, take a break from all the social media apps and enjoy the great outdoors.
The cabin in Critz was renovated so that its visitors can fully enjoy their time at camp. Not only did Renovation Hunters create ways for wildlife to come closer to the cabin — both for hunting and watching – but they also worked to keep the original charm of the property while making adjustments to better accommodate the entire family.
