Tiny Home in Baldwin, MI Gets an Overhaul: Season 2 of Renovation Hunters

For the second build of Season 2, Renovation Hunters chose homeowners who had a tiny home (with a big story) in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. This small space (roughly 500 square feet) received a complete overhaul, taking it down to the studs while maximizing every inch of the home design – boosting functionality and giving the property a complete makeover.

Renovation Hunters Season 3 is Here!

The Story Behind This Tiny House Renovation

This home was more than just a small property with stunning sunsets views. It was a family’s well-loved lake retreat filled with endless memories and a newfound purpose – the Lewis family was hoping to use it as a getaway where inner city kids could have the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors!

But, upkeep – along with DIY projects – became a challenge. And, while the family had big dreams of updating the tiny house design and its living areas, it seemed like an impossible feat on their own. That’s where Renovation Hunters stepped in, bringing with them unique design ideas that completely transformed the home – we’re talking ALL aspects of the property: walls, ceilings, kitchen countertops and cabinets, bathrooms, outside spaces – everything!

Even though this Baldwin property had the smallest footprint out of every project up to this point, it was (without a doubt) the most extensive renovation that Renovation Hunters has tackled – and it was completed in just one week’s time!

Baird Products Used for this Unique Before and After

Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods supplied multiple products for this unique renovation – shiplap barn siding, mouldings, dimensional lumber and interior doors.

In order to create an open, airy feel in the tiny kitchen and living room, Baird Brothers’ knotty pine barn shiplap was added in as a ceiling treatment. Whether you’re downsizing and making renovations or simply want to update your living space, shiplap is a unique option for both accent walls and ceilings. In many lakehouse properties, shiplap walls are painted after installation, while shiplap ceiling treatments are typically left with a natural appearance
(using just a light stain or clear top coat).

For space-saving purposes, Baird’s dimensional lumber was used to create stylish bunk beds, casing and a small, handmade sign made specifically for the Lewis family. Interior doors and beautiful mouldings helped to bring together the look and feel of the space. If you’re limited on square footage but are seeking a modern tiny house design, this is a great project for inspiration!
