The 2020 This Old House Idea House in Eastham, Massachusetts (aka scenic Cape Cod) maintains several traditional Cape house features, like its classic shingle-style, but also includes unique features like an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) for in-laws or renters.
Designed by Union Studio Architecture & Community Design, built by master builder Matt Cole of Cape Associates, and outfitted by some of America’s top home building and decorating brands (including Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods), the Cottage on the Cape Idea House is a sublime mix of classic Cape Cod style with ultra-modern design.
This Idea House build highlights the opportunity to attract young, working professionals to the pricey New England area. So, Christina Carlson created a winning solution: she brought back an old idea (the in-law apartment) which could be used as originally intended or as a rental to offset mortgage costs.
But, that’s not all! From the ground up, the home is a perfectly balanced mix of traditional and modern. This shingle-style dwelling boasts winding walkways, a white picket fence, overflowing window boxes, and a storybook roofline. Yet for a modern twist, shiplap is painted in a bright ocean blue, windows are clad in contrasting black instead of white, and signature nautical details give a nod to the coastal environment.
Inside, the living room, dining room, and kitchen all merge into one open floor plan. Smart technology and innovative products, alongside stunning hardwood elements, continue the theme of blending classic with contemporary.
