This Old House’s Jamestown
Net-Zero House Project

The Powers family’s 1920s bungalow includes Baird flooring, interior doors, shiplap, and a gorgeous stairwell.

Donald Powers, the architect behind Union Studio Architecture and Community Design, along with his wife, Dana, designed plans to renovate their century-old New England cottage in Jamestown, Rhode Island. They implemented energy-saving technologies that allowed them to become self-sustaining and focused on creating a clean aesthetic for the interior design.

This Classic Yankee House features several Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods products.

This Old House’s 40th anniversary project doubled the size of the home while meeting net-zero energy efficient building standards.

The home features numerous enhancements:

  • An elevated kitchen
  • Open dining with built-in banquette
  • A spacious living room
  • An upstairs hall that doubles as a library
  • Solar panels incorporated into the barn’’s exterior design

Baird Brothers’ quarter sawn white oak flooring, interior doors, stair treads, and risers are used throughout the home, along with a graceful new handrail for the expanded front entry. Don and Dana also chose Baird’s quarter sawn white oak as a seamless backdrop for their furnishings, and finished several spaces by incorporating Baird Brothers’ horizontal poplar shiplap interior siding.

This Old House and Sweenor Builders, along with many home renovation product manufacturers and craftspeople — including Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods — helped make the Powers family’s dream a beautiful reality.

The energy saving goal was to create a net-zero home with classic design, and the photos below showcase the result of transforming a 1920s bungalow into a stunning success worthy of the show’s 40th anniversary

This project should inspire any homeowner to the realization that they can make efforts toward energy conservation while creating clean, modern spaces, no matter the age of the house.
