Renovates 19th Century Seaside Cottage comes back to life with Baird Brothers products.

This Old House’s 2021 Project Home rejuvenated a Victorian-era cottage with 21st-century amenities – all while keeping the home’s original charm. Decades of neglect caused a lot of the need for renovation. The team at This Old House restored what they could and replicated the rest to keep the historic beach house as close to the original as possible.

The original structure was built back in 1890, so it took a lot of effort to bring the property up to today’s standards. The plumbing and electricity had to be completely redone by HVAC expert Richard Trethewey to better suit the family. Other updates included a new mudroom and laundry room connector, upstairs bedroom suite, and a restored front porch with garage addition (with elaborate shingle and trim details). All in all, 800 square feet of new construction was added to the structure.

The 2021 Project Home Comes to Life

The Seaside Victorian Cottage, located in a coastal town near Narragansett, Rhode Island, was inhabitable due to years of rot, deterioration and structural damage. Much-needed renovations improved the foundation while honoring the historical structure itself.

Sweenor Builders led the restoration of this once grand Queen Anne home. Maintaining the original character and architecture of the house was of the utmost importance to both This Old House and the Narragansett Historic District Commission.

General contractor Tom Silva helped bring interior designer Kristen Martone’s ideas to life. The home’s design incorporated the historical aspect with the “seaside holiday” feel overlooking the water.

Renovations opened up the living area by turning the five-room floor plan into three, combining the living room, kitchen and dining room into an airy, open space to match the British seaside vibes.

This Seaside Victorian Cottage is filled with a blend of new and old features:

  • Elaborate shingle and trim details
  • Mudroom and laundry room connector
  • Garage addition with a new bedroom suite upstairs
  • A reconfigured main floor with long sight lines
  • Restored original stained-glass windows
  • Outdoor living spaces (complete with a cabana!)
