This Old House Westerly Dutch Colonial

Baird flooring, interior doors, shiplap,
and a new stairwell helped
Jeff Sweenor turn a one-story ranch
into a
two-story Dutch Colonial.

The Little House That Grew features several Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods products.

For its 41st season project, This Old House® transformed a single-story 1940s ranch with knotty pine paneling into a Dutch Colonial revival with a gambrel roof. In fact, the This Old House Westerly Dutch Colonial was completely renovated to add a entirely new second floor (and plenty of living space).

How the Westerly Project Came To Be

Scott and Shayla Adams, owners of the home, have a growing family. They also have quite the imagination, because when they saw the cozy ranch they envisioned a spacious home of an entirely different style. The couple eventually purchased the Westerly, Rhode Island house from the original homeowners, who had built its cabinetry and oversaw the construction of the knotty pine paneled family home.

In the end, this project became more of a transformation than a renovation!! The new second story adds 1000 more square feet to accommodate larger kitchen and dining areas while also adding a new master suite and bedrooms for their two daughters. Scott and Shayla also asked Jeff Sweenor, from Sweenor Builders, to convert one bedroom into a laundry room and another room into a playspace. The master bedroom suite area showcases the interior details representative of the exterior’s new sweeping gambel shingle roofline, brought to life with many windows to capture the view.

See The Westerly Project Come to Life

This Old House and general contractor Sweenor Builders, along with many home renovation product manufacturers and craftspeople (including Baird Brothers Fine Hardwoods), brought imagination and inspiration into the Westerly house transformation.

This 41st season project proves that what you see with your mind can be more powerful than what you see with your eyes.

Products used in the Westerly Ranch House to Colonial Transformation

Westerly’s widened front entry leads into an open-concept floor plan. In addition to the home’s new second story, the first floor’s ceiling was been raised one foot and the living space was opened up by incorporating an 18″ beam to support the new second floor. Baird Brothers’ random-width, random-length, end-matched quarter sawn white oak floor adds character to the space, while shiplap helps to define the look.

The Westerly house features a long list of Baird Brothers products: quarter sawn white oak flooring, interior doors, oak stair treads, risers, shiplap, and a graceful new handrail for the expanded front entry. The result was a warm, seamless backdrop worthy of all the family memories that will take place in the years to come.

When it comes to the doors, Baird Brothers created a true showpiece — wooden, four-paneled interior doors that were custom-made. During the production of these beautiful doors, This Old House’s host Kevin O’Connor visited Baird Brothers’ Canfield, OH location to talk with Terry Baird, whose family has owned the business for over sixty years. Kevin watched as Baird Brothers craftsmen graded the lumber, dried it, then manufactured and assembled the doors.
